Roses and Thorns

Our local paper runs a column every Wednesday entitled Roses and Thorns – it’s a chance for the community to give a shout out to others for doing good deeds and not-so-good deeds.  I look forward to Wednesdays, not because it’s the proverbial “Hump Day”, but because I can amuse myself by reading the column and trying to guess if I know any of the people who are being publicly praised or, well, pooped on!

I like the column so much that I’ve decided to create my own “column” right here on my blog about all of the good and bad things that happen or catch my attention during the week.  I believe Jasmine Star does something similar, but I can’t for the life of me remember what she calls hers.  I thought about only doing the roses part because I have been making a very conscious effort in the last year to only allow positive vibes and thoughts into my bubble, but sometimes it’s therapeutic to vent too.
So, here goes.

Today’s Roses go out to:

Tara G. for being so amazingly selfless as to pack up her life and move to Guatemala to live and work in an orphanage and for having the guts to give her beloved Harley (my favorite Beagle besides Snoopy, of course) to my friend Florriann and her family.  It takes some amazing cahones to do both of those things and I think you make the world a better place.

Florriann, Glen, Alysha and Janna Banana for opening up their hearts and home to Harley…and for agreeing to take all of our fish and the tank for Janna’s room.  You guys just have so much love to give and I thank my lucky stars each and every day to have you in my life.

Juno (my dog) for always making me laugh when he drags his six GIANT stuffed animals out into the living room (each and every night) to make a huge pile of stuffies to chew and then sleep on.  He’s been doing it since Christmas and, as Greg says, “It just never gets old!”

Greggor (my beloved hub) for spending the entire weekend cleaning the house (washing windows and floors, vacuuming, doing laundry, washing walls and organizing the Foyer) while I worked my little heart out and never had to worry about a meal or walking the dogs or anything else.  I’ve changed my mind and take back everything I’ve ever thought or said about you!!!! You are truly a magnificent man and I am so lucky to have you and your huge heart to love me!

Today’s Thorns go out to:

Old Man Winter.  Why can’t you just get the point and go back to wherever it is you came from?  We’ve all had enough of your kind around these parts. You’re like that annoying relative or neighbour that everyone has – the one who always overstays his welcome or camps out on your doorstep and never seems to get the hint that you have things to do and places to go.  GET OFF MY DOORSTEP.  Sheesh.

Juno (yes, the same lovable dog I just sent Roses to) for spending the day running outside and barking every time a siren went by or he heard a car door close or the wind whistled through the pines or he heard the Who’s down in Whoville singing a song.  You interrupted my work flow and broke my concentration at least twelve times and I did not appreciate it one bit…all that even after I ran him outside for an hour and for 1/2 hour on the treadmill.  What gives woof dog?

Vistek for not having one of the new lenses I ordered in stock and holding BOTH of my lenses until the missing lens was restocked.  I’ve been pacing at the door for five days, wondering where the darn FedEX dude was, only to get an email this morning that says the lenses have only just been shipped.  Even though I use your website all of the time and have never had bad service or anything of the sort, I am sending you a pointy, painful thorn just because you have made my impatience meter skyrocket and I am feeling pissy that I’ve had to wait for new camera equipment.  (Don’t worry, I’m sure I’ll get over it in a few weeks when I order more stuff!!!).

Okay, so that’s it for the R & T’s today.  When I look back through it, my life seems pretty sweet to only have a few minor, nitpicky and petty thorns to hand out.  I guess what I’m saying is that I am blessed to have such a good life and such good people (and animals)  to love and amuse me.

Oh yah, Jasmine calls hers Kisses & Disses…she’s such a funny, funny lady. (You can check out her blog at

Here’s a picture of Juno and Harley cruising to the beach with us, just to finish this off with a sweet note!
