Meet The Westerbys

Wellllllll, it’s been a week since I promised to put up a post about my friends and clients, The Westerbys.  Greg and I went on a much-needed vacation and I tried to get a post up before leaving, but didn’t quite make it.  I planned to work during the vacation, but after much cajoling by my dearest, darling husband, I decided to leave the computer behind and just take the camera. Greg said many things to try and convince me to step away from my security blanket (and livelihood) for a week.  “You need a break.  You need to unplug. You need to spend some quality time with me.”  He’s such a smart man…sometimes!  So, I unplugged and, even though it was REALLY difficult for me to do, it was exactly what I needed.  I’ll post some of our vacation pics sometimes this week, but for now, I’d like you to meet the Westerbys – Bob, Beverly and Dylan!

Growing up, Bob’s sister, Jenn, was one of my best friends and her and Bob have always been really close, so I saw a fair bit of him through the years.  The thing that sticks out about Bob (although I’m sure his male friends would laugh at this and shake their heads in denial) is that he has a HUGE heart.  He cares about people and he is one of those rare manly men who is all hard and tough on the exterior and soft and loving at the core (just like my Greg!).  When we were growing up, Bob was always the guy in his group of friends who was nice to everyone and treated people equally (unless he was on the ice!).  He’s a genuine guy and you can’t help but love him.

Beverly is Bob’s beeeeeeautiful wife, although she doesn’t see her beauty the way others do. It’s such a common occurrence these days for women to compare themselves to others and always spend time striving to reach beauty goals (whether it be weight loss or some other, equally relentless monkey-on-the-back type goal) that we often miss the obvious – the beauty that we already possess.  Bev is beautiful – inside and out.  It’s easy to see that when you see the way Bob looks at her  – like she’s a mouth-watering appetizer on the Love Menu. She was worried that the pics of her wouldn’t turn out well, but I must say, all I see when I look at them is a natural beauty.  She didn’t even wear makeup for the shoot and she still looks fantastic.  Not only is she beautiful, but she’s easy to talk to, loves her family so much that it shines through in everything she does, and has a knack for instantly making people feel comfortable around her.

And then there’s Dylan.  He’s all BOY.  Rough and tough.  Fearless.  Covered in scars already (and he’s not even three yet). But he’s also sweet and thoughtful and loves to laugh.  He was hilarious to shoot and made me laugh out loud several times in the short hour of shooting.  When we were done, he was riding his bike on the deck and he fell off and the handle bars smacked him in the mouth, drawing blood and making him cry.  It didn’t last long, though and soon he was sucking on a freezee to take the swelling down.  The best part was that there was blood all over his face by the time we left and Bob & Bev laughed because they insisted that this is what he normally looked like.  Hilarious.

As many of my clients already know, I’m not a big fan of posing people.  I would much rather follow people around in their natural environment and just shoot them “doing what they do”.  I try to get all of the posed shots out of the way first, so I can spend the remainder of the time having fun with the family and making them feel as relaxed as possible while I’m shooting. Bev paid me the best compliment when she posted a comment on a previous blog that said, “I wanted to say that the way you manage to capture the “realness” of people is truly magical! The joy and love comes through so clearly through your lens but also the silliness, playfulness and contemplation that make families unique.”  That is exactly what I try to do with every family photo session and it makes me feel amazing that I am accomplishing it and that people are noticing.  Thanks for the lovely (and ego boosting) compliment.  I hope you enjoy your pics as much as I enjoyed taking them.

Here are my favorites from the shoot.  I will be posting a link to my facebook page with all of their photos in the next few days.
